The Steve Vo’s Story

Steve grew up in a family where cooking was a way of life. His mother, Fannie Nelson, held a PhD as a chef, teaching culinary arts. He was lucky enough to be the only one in his family to have her as a teacher and mentor, which is where he learned many of his cooking techniques.

The Cheesesteak Story

In 1930, Pat Olivieri, a South Philadelphia hot dog vendor, accidentally created the legendary Cheesesteak.

Bored with his standard fare, he decided to grill chopped steak and top it with some onions. A passing taxicab stopped to ask what he was cooking and ordered a steak sandwich of his own. The very next day, as the story goes, other cabbies came in search of this new and delicious sandwich. The demand became so great that Olivieri opened up his own shop to sell this new creation. Eventually he added cheese to the recipe. Today his shop, Pat’s King of Steaks, competes with Geno’s across the street for the title of best cheesesteak in Philadelphia.
